Roles in Peking Opera (行当分类)

Characters are divided into four main roles: Sheng, Dan, Jing, and Chou. 京剧角色分为四个主要行当：生、旦、净、丑。

1. Sheng (生)

Sheng is the general name for male characters. It includes "Lao Sheng" (older men) and "Xiao Sheng" (young men). 生是男角色的统称。它包括“老生”（老年男子）和“小生”（青少年男子）。

2. Dan (旦)

Dan refers to all female characters. "Qing Yi" usually plays elegant women, while "Hua Dan" plays lively girls. 旦是指所有女性角色。“青衣”通常扮演端庄的女性，“花旦”扮演活泼的少女。

3. Jing (净)

Jing is the "Painted Face" role. These characters have strong personalities or special powers, like heroes or gods. 净是“大花脸”。这些角色通常具有鲜明的性格或特殊的能力，如英雄或神灵。

4. Chou (丑)

Chou is the clown. They are funny and often have white paint on their noses to bring laughter to the audience. 丑是丑角（小花脸）。他们很幽默，鼻子处通常涂有白粉，为观众带来笑声。
